Shiseido is a Japanese company that is over 150 years old, based on a foundation of Eastern aesthetics and Western science. The packaging is designed in a chic, minimalist style, while the brand’s marketing to skincare emphasizes a holistic approach.
According to the Shiseido website, its Skincare line is currently developing additional aromatherapy ingredients to help calm anxiety and minimize the effects of external stressors on the skin. Although this may sound appealing to those who frequently notice that the stress from their hectic life has appeared on their face in the form of lines and bags, this cream is nonetheless lacking in some of the most beneficial new technology.

Xylitol is probably best known as an artificial sweetener, as it has been appearing in an increasing number of chewing gums and candies. It has also popped up in a number of personal health products, from mouthwash to nasal spray.
It was discovered in World War II-era Finland, when the country was suffering from an acute sugar shortage. Desperate for an alternative, Finnish scientists produced Xylitol from the bark of the birch tree. Although the substance had been known to the world of organic chemistry for some 30 years, it wasn’t until necessity arose that it was stabilized for commercial use.
While dietary Xylitol has been shown to increase collagen production in rats, the amount of research on its topical benefits is considerably more limited.

According to Shiseido’s website, Xylitol helps to retexturize skin, leaving it smooth and better able to receive additional moisture. However, as discussed above, currently there is little clinical evidence to support this claim.
However, the website does get it right when it emphasizes that the key to better-looking skin involves treating it from the inside out. Some new ingredients have been shown to stimulate the production of new collagen, helping to fill wrinkles from beneath the surface. Unfortunately, Multi-Energizing Cream contains a fairly standard blend of ingredients.

Shiseido describes its Multi-Energizing Cream as a “multi-function” cream, but we could not find any additional benefits beyond its simple function as an emollient. In spite of the brand’s claims regarding Xylitol, consumers would likely be better off with a product that incorporated more advanced water-binding agents, such as Hyaluronic Acid.
In addition to the promise of better skin, Shiseido also claims that the fragrances in its Multi-Energizing Cream were formulated based on the principles of aromatherapy and will help to ease tension. Unfortunately many people find that strong added fragrances may irritate their skin as well as noses.
