|
This cream, “Retinol Cream .50%”, is manufactured and marketed by Benev® products, whose motto is “The Power of Purity™” and whose mission is “to become a leader in the healthcare industry with our emphasis on immunology and anti-aging.” Retinol is an ingredient and is found in many products on the market.
Benev® products are those in which only plastic surgeons, dermatologists and other physicians involved in skin care may purchase products. Their products are in three categories: pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and nutraceuticals. Their pharmaceuticals encompass hair regrowth products; their cosmeceuticals include the largest array of products, including exfoliators, moisturizers, sun protection, specialized products, kits, and cleansers; and their nutraceuticals area offers dietary supplements.
The product we will be reviewing is in the specialized products of the cosmeceutical section.

 | Ingredients in Focus |
|
Retinol Cream .50%, as it states contains .50 percent Retinol, which the site states is Vitamin A in its purest form. One aspect of Retinol that is well-known among skincare specialists is its instability. Benev® claims that the inclusion of antioxidants stabilize the Retinol is this formula and keep it from degrading, so that it provides a “consistent activity level with each application.”
A negative aspect about Retinol is that it is known to be potentially irritating to the skin—not something you want in an anti-aging formula meant to enhance the youthfulness of the skin. This is due to its Retinoic Acid content. Many have heard of the irritating nature of Retin-A, which contains the same acid. Benev® claims that its inclusion of Rose Hip Oil infuses much moisture into the skin, counteracting the potential skin irritation that Retinoic Acid brings.
Rose Hip Oil contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatting acids and is, according to the site, “a source of trans-retinoic acid in a natural bio-available form.” All trans-retinoic acid is said to aid in the production of skin cells and is said to inhibit cell death in patients with HIV and is also being studied as a possible treatment for AIDS patients in regard to problems with malignant tumors of the connective tissue. As you can see, all of these applications of Retinoic Acid deal with healing skin disorders, whatever the cause of the onset of the disorder.
Benev® does not list the ingredients in full on the site, so consumers are at a loss to be able to determine if there are any ingredients that they do not want on their skin. Whether this information is disclosed to the doctors who purchase the products, and, in turn, distribute them to their patients is not discernable from the company website.

 | Website |
|
The website provides over 50 doctor’s offices and “medical spas” from which doctors can contact either online or via telephone to order Benev® products.
It does give a physician locator for potential customers who are looking to find a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist that distribute Benev® products.
It also gives online testimonials from patients and doctors, alike, about the success of the product.

 | Final Thoughts |
|
Even though the site claims that its products are purchased internationally by physicians for their patients, it is not a good enough reason to endorse a product. There has been ample information on patients who had extremely irritated skin as a result of Retinoic Acid, and we do not believe the inclusion of another ingredient to reduce the effects of this irritation qualify the inclusion of the irritating substance, itself.
In addition to this, we are surprised to see that such a company would not list its scientific findings about the ingredients in several anti-aging products. There are companies that provide one effective product for anti-aging purposes that they stand behind and provide the scientific data on the site so that potential customers can educate themselves.
There are natural over the counter products on the market that contain natural ingredients that are also in the skin that are best suited for an anti-aging product. These ingredients include Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid, both known to become depleted as we age and need to be restored within the skin. Seek products with these ingredients that are scientifically proven to keep skin youthful and wrinkle-free.
