La Mer Review Summary |
|
Like many luxury products, La Mer boasts a miraculous creation story. Over 30 years ago, NASA Scientist Max Huber was working with volatile chemicals when there was an explosion. Huber survived, but suffered extensive chemical burns and scarring. Over the next 12 years, he would try 6,000 combinations of ingredients in search of the formula that would help to smooth his skin and finally, he found it in a blend of fairly standard ingredients. The difference, according to La Mer’s website, is in the quantities and the timing. Unfortunately, Huber’s original experiments were never documented, so it is almost impossible to know exactly what his process was.
La Mer is now owned by Estee Lauder, and its line has expanded exponentially since Huber’s discovery. Like many brands, it produces serums, toners, cleansers, and creams for both day and night in order to “enhance” the original formula. This is just one of the many strategies used by the cosmetic industry to compel consumers to buy extraneous products.

 | Products In Focus |
|
Crème de la Mer is based on the “miracle broth” that was developed by Dr. Huber some 30 years ago. By the company’s own admission, the ingredients are nothing spectacular; just sea kelp and lecithin, as well as a few standard vitamins and minerals. However, according to its product description it has the ability to perform a variety of functions beyond smoothing wrinkles, including soothing sensitive skin and shrinking pores.
In spite of La Mer’s promise that this cream helps to increase firmness, the product description makes no mention of collagen, which is the main protein that gives skin its elasticity. When collagen levels decline, skin tends to sag and crease, causing wrinkles to form. For this reason, many women may see improved results with a product that increases collagen production.

Although La Mer is owned by Estee Lauder, its website includes several features that are not included in other Lauder brand sites. For example, it features “testimonials,” although these actually turn out to be snippets of articles. It does, however, include an FAQ section, which answers common questions regarding the company’s testing policies, proper usage, etc.
Another unique aspect of La Mer’s policies is its offer to provide a free sample of choice with purchase, so that consumers have the opportunity to try other products in the brand’s line without risk. Of course, this also means that those wishing to try La Mer for the first time will still have to pay full price, plus shipping, for at least one product.
|
 | Positives |
|
• Does not test on animals
• Website posts an FAQ section
|
 | Negatives |
• Cream does not contain an active collagen-boosting ingredient
• Can be quite expensive (Crème de la Mer costs $110 per ounce)
• Many customers have spoken of their disappointments with this product on consumer blogs. Click here to read more about these on the La Mer blog.

 | Final Thoughts |
|
La Mer certainly has the honor of possessing one of the most unique creation stories in the cosmetics industry. Of course, the question still remains: if Dr. Huber’s “miracle broth” was so effective, then why do consumers need so many ancillary products?
The manufacturers of most high-quality anti-aging treatments generally prefer to devote the bulk of the research and resources into creating one really good cream, rather than trying to sell complex and expensive regimens. For this reason, women may want to consider an anti-aging treatment that contains active compounds that are specifically designed to increase collagen synthesis.
